Music Therapy Assistant

Here at Rainbows Children’s Hospice, we provide specialist palliative care and end-of-life support to over 750 Babies, Children, and Young People living with life-limiting conditions and terminal illnesses as well as approximately 3,000 people, including families, siblings, and carers, across the East Midlands. Simply put, we’re here to brighten short lives and support families, wherever they are.

We are currently seeking a Music Therapy Assistant to provide music sessions to babies, children, young people, and their families who access Rainbows Hospice services, by developing, implementing and evaluating programmes of sessions for individuals and groups within the service.

Location: The role is mainly based at the hospice with outreach to homes, hospitals and community hubs so your own transport is essential.

Hours: 22.5 per week – 0830 – 1630 Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with a minimum of 1 in 4 weekends required.

About the role                                                                                                            

Working as part of a dedicated and compassionate team, you will assess individual needs, design creative and responsive programmes, and deliver engaging music therapy sessions for both individuals and groups. Through your work, you will empower children and families to flourish, making a lasting and positive difference within the community.

You will play a vital and meaningful role in enriching the lives of babies, children, young people, and their families through the transformative power of music. You will help create safe, inclusive, and nurturing spaces where individuals feel heard and valued — spaces where they can express themselves freely, build confidence, and develop essential communication and emotional skills.

Some of the key responsibilities include (but not limited to):

  • Some knowledge and interest of Music Therapy and music interaction which can be used appropriately during music sessions.
  • Has a strong background in music with ability to improvise and develop music playing skills.
  • To offer musical interventions to babies, children, young people, and their families who are at Rainbows for a period of care, being responsible for the delivery, and evaluation of the music sessions
  • To develop and maintain a caseload of children, young people and their families who require Outreach and ongoing musical input. Outreach sessions are for babies, children, young people and families who require input in their own homes, hospitals or community hubs
  • To work as a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team within the Hospice
  • To offer flexible music interventions across the hospice working in conjunction with other team members.

Requirements

  • Experience of working with Babies, Children and Young People
  • Experience working in healthcare or using music within healthcare and understanding of how music can benefit patient wellbeing
  • Knowledge of or experience in using music creatively; to be flexible in music-making and able to adapt depending on the response
  • Good at listening and reading the energy from groups/individuals
  • Assist with making clinical judgements and analysis involving complex facts or situations.
  • Able to participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Able to establish and maintain effective communication with a wide variety of colleagues, clients and carers
  • Physically able and willing to manoeuvre heavy instruments, wheelchairs etc. for short periods during the working day
  • You understand how to adapt your communication style in sensitive situations, both verbally and non-verbally
